MSAD-53’s spending budget excludes the SRO, who mom and dad say is a part product for young ones. This is the most current in districts shaking up how they take care of faculty safety.

PITTSFIELD, Maine — Officer Michael Cray with the Pittsfield Law enforcement Section was a school source officer, covering a few educational institutions for three several years.

“This is a condition where by the ball acquired dropped,” Cray stated. “I will not believe it was intentional but the ball received dropped.”

He’s speaking about the the latest funds for MSAD-53 excluding the place of SRO. The budget was voted via 240-124 in the course of June’s primary election and did not include funding for Cray’s place.

Cray reported he was approached by the city manager and MSAD-53 superintendent in March about the elimination of his situation.

“They mentioned there ended up economic issues. It was involving the SRO posture and the educating position, and I can fully grasp the academics. … It built me mad. It made me mad for the reason that it truly is a place that is essential,” Cray explained.

Pittsfield officials instructed Information Heart Maine the university board experienced spending plan issues and the district will save $73,420 by reducing the SRO place.

But officer Cray reported it shouldn’t be about the revenue.

“The greatest intention of this method is to continue to keep little ones protected,” Cray explained.

Mothers and fathers say they were being blindsided, as Cray is a pillar of their community.

“I just discovered out shortly prior to the vote took spot,” John Dean, an worker with the area large faculty and guardian, said.

“I am a little involved. I have viewed the affect he has the with the children. They’ve always experienced terrific factors to say about him, and I know he is experienced an influence on the young children who are in a minor a lot more desire for his solutions,” Dean said.

Father or mother Kirsten Pomeroy reported Cray’s absence will go away a void.

“I wasn’t also pleased about it. I was actually unhappy in fact. I’m seriously hoping we can get the job done one thing out,” Pomeroy mentioned. “I am not sure how we’re going to transfer forward in changing that void.”

Superintendent Sharon Littlefield refused to job interview for this story, but she did offer statements in excess of e mail.

“They [police department] are a 50 %-mile away from all 3 educational institutions and respond rapidly to our desires,” Littlefield claimed in a statement.

She also denied that no facts was available about the SROs elimination.

“The point that we would no longer agreement with the city for an SRO was shared at the April Faculty Board Meeting at which time the budget was accredited. We were being explained to that there would be support for the SRO in attendance at the April conference. No one particular attended.”

Pittsfield isn’t really alone in its shake-ups with how they deal with campus basic safety. Portland General public Educational facilities removed its SRO positions in 2020, and Hermon educational institutions around Bangor just built area in its the latest price range to seek the services of an SRO.
